Overview:

If you are looking for a high performance espresso coffee grinder with micrometrical adjustment of the grinding burrs and available for the most demanding situation presented by an espresso fanatic, then this is the grinder fo you. In January of 2004, Macap presented and sent three samples of this grinder to 1st-line Equipment, LLC. After evaluation, we provided some feedback on some changes needed on the M4 grinder. Unlike some other coffee grinder manufacturers, Macap made our requested changes at their cost while maintaining a very competitive price point for both the home enthusiast and the coffee shop owner. Some standout features include chrome plated steel to match polished stainless steel espresso machines and the placement of the electrical cord is under the grinder (not out of the side on the body as found on many other espresso coffee grinders).

Finally, do not feel confused between the Macap M4 and Macap M5 grinder. The M4 grinder is the newest offshoot of the Macap M5. The Macap M5 has a longer, higher bean hopper on top that makes it extend over 18" in height - not practical for the home. The Macap M4 was designed with a lower, but wider bean hopper profile for use in your home, office, or commercial establishments. Please note that the Macap M4 is considered a commercial-grade grinder and is not returnable under our return policy if used - as this grinder is capable for any espresso machine. Please make sure you have the necessary space before purchasing.

Notes:

  1. Other views: Back, Top view, bean hopper, tamper, and ground catch tray
  2. There are three screws holes on the doser, the two longer screws are used for the built-in tamper. The third shorter screw is for filling in the third hole.
  3. The manual provided by Macap still mentions the 'stop pin' for the stepped version.
  4. Cleaning the parts on the Macap - before use, the bean hopper and covers should be cleaned with a mild, non-abrasive soap and rinsed.
  5. No retro kit available to upgrade older grinders.
  6. Please note as with all coffee grinders, it is very important to only change grind settings on Macap coffee grinders when the unit is powered 'on' and the burrs are in motion. If you do not do this, the burrs will 'gunk' up and require cleaning by you every time this occurs. Changing the grind settings when the burrs are not in motion will render the grinder to only produce very coarse grinds or no grinds at all. If this result oc

5 out of 5 stars Stunning grinder that performs as good as it looks 02/01/2005
Reviewer: S. Lee   (2) from New York, NY US
I bought this grinder as well as a Mazzer mini. In terms of grind quality, both are the same. Though not stepless like the Mazzer, the MACAP is an overall better performer. The Mazzer may be stepless but the adjusting collar is so tight, it's hard for me to move it without exerting so much force that I way overshoot the target so I really won't bother unless the shots are really off. The Macap has minute ridges that make adjusting the grind a snap. I often grind for espresso, then drip, then back to espresso again in a matter of seconds. I can also get right back to my original setting. Forget about doing that on the Mazzer. Also, the Macap doser leaves WAY WAY fewer grinds than the Mazzer. On top of it, the Macap has a faster breaking mechanism so that you can pulse the grinder to clear out the chute. If you are a neatnik and really like to pulse, brush, pulse - those extra seconds add up. Plus, it fits under the cabinets and looks beautiful whereas the Mazzer has a more industrial look and has to be used hopperless or have the hopper chopped down.

5 out of 5 stars Solid, excellent quality grinder 12/31/2004
Reviewer: Michelle   (2) from Georgetown, TX US
The Macap is our first semi/commercial grinder, the first step (well, second after good quality beans) in upgrading our espresso experience. It was easy to set up, and very simple to dial in for several selections of beans we had on hand. Personally, we like the stepped adjustment as it lets us get repeatable results after the initial dialing in. The doser sweeps very cleanly. We use a small brush to get all the grinds from the chute to the doser since we only grind what we need on a shot-by-shot basis. A doserless version might be nice for folks like us, however I have read some reports that doserless models can be messy, and I definitely appreciate how neat our Macap is.

5 out of 5 stars Great grinder! 12/15/2004
Reviewer: Gary K.   (2) from Sammamish, WA US
While maybe not as well known as a Mazzer Mini, the MACAP has been getting good reviews as the one that might finally unseat the Mini from its position as the best grinder for the serious home espresso enthusiast. After considering both, I decided to purchase a MACAP from 1st Line based on the quality of the grinder and the great interaction I had with 1st Line staff. Both decisions were right on; the MACAP has taken espresso preparation in our house to a new level, and my experience with 1st Line was as good as I've had with any online retailer, ever. My only regret is I didn't make the jump sooner!
