Since I don't have anything to compare this grinder with other than blade grinders where you might as well just through the coffee in the blender I will just stick to my observations.
I have used the rocky for about 7 years now and have had very few problems with it. The settings seem to vary quite a bit from machine to machine, when I first got the grinder I researched the web in an attempt to determine what grind I should be using for my esspresso and most people indicated numbers from 10-20, but I eventually found that I needed my machine set to about 4 in order to produce anything that resembled a good espresso grind. Within the last couple months I found that I was down to 0 on the grind setting and still couldn't get a good grind out of the machine. I spoke with Jim here at 1-st line and was informed that it was probably time for new burrs. So I ordered a set and was pleased with how easy they were to replace. After the replaced burrs I'm grinding a nice fine espresso at 14-15 and pleased that I'll get much more life out of the machine.
The doser doesn't sweep the hopper out very well, but I only grind enough to make a double shot and brush the extra out from time to time with a brush. I haven't had a problem with getting the beans to feed as some people have indicated, but one grind for me doesn't end up going above the finger guard after I dump the beans in and knock one or 2 beans off the top of the guard. I've thought about trying a doserless grinder, but it is nice to throw the beans in and grind them while surfing for the right water temp on the espresso machine.

I bought a used Rocky Doser from 1st Line and so far I am very happy with the quality of the grinding action. Lots of adjustment possibilities, and I did take out the finger guard per direction from Jim as there were a few times the espresso beans were not feeding properly (Lavazza Super Espresso). Working well now, and it does compliment the Sylvia nicely. I was reluctant to spend the money on a grinder of this quality, but all the reviewers discussed how important a good grinder is to the espresso process, so I made the plunge and I am not sorry I did. Customer service and support are excellent at 1st Line and would not hesitate to recommend them to any future purchasers.

So far, I am very disappointed with this grinder. The beans do not feed consistently into the grinder teeth and I have to push them along several times during the grinding process. It also is very messy and spews ground coffee all over the place even if I place and bowl under the shute.
I has a Starbuck's Barista before for about 10 years and it died. I thought I was upgrading, but this machine is a big disappointment.

The Rocky is a great espresso investment. I feel a good grinder is more important than the espresso machine to obtain a good shot. The Rocky is reasonably priced and works well. In three years of use I have only had to replace a $1.95 spring. You will not be sorry if you get Rocky.

Having no experience with quality grinders before the Rocky Espresso Doser I was quite suprised to find out how big, how heavy and how quiet he is. This is one great grinder and paired with the Silvia it makes for one kick butt espresso duo.
He's really easy to take apart, easy to clean and the burrs (if and when they need replacement) are neither expensive nor difficult to replace. I am really pleased with the Rocky.
